This is the LODD 1¾" Challenge Coin.  It represents the members that died while in the Performance of their Duty.  The American flag:  the red on the American flag stands for Bravery, the white stands for Purity, Innocence and Freedom and the blue stands for Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.  The 50 stars represent the 50 U.S. states.  The 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies that rebelled against the British Crown and became the first states of the Union.  The City of Chicago flag:  the three white stripes of the flag represent (from top to bottom), the North, West and South sides of the city.  The top blue stripe represents Lake Michigan and the North Branch of the Chicago River.  The bottom blue stripe represents the South Branch of the river and the Great Canal.  The four red six-pointed stars represent: (1) Fort Dearborn (star added in 1939).  The six points of the star symbolize transportation, labor commerce, finance, populousness and salubrity. (2) Great Chicago Fire (1871). The six points of the star represent the virtues of religion, education, aesthetics, justice, beneficence and civic pride. (3) World's Columbian Exposition of 1893.  The six points of the star stand for political entities Chicago has belonged to and the flags that have flown over the area:  France1693, Great Britain 1763, Virginia 1778, the Northwest Territory 1798, Indiana Territory 1802 and Illinois 1818. (4) Century of Progress Exposition (1933).  Its points of the star refer to bragging rights:  the United States' (3rd largest city), Chicago's Latin Motto (Urbs in horto - City in a garden), Chicago's "I Will" Motto, the Great Central Marketplace, Wonder City and Convention City.  Six-pointed stars are used because five-pointed stars are for sovereign states.  The 3-3-5 is the Code of Signals that a Fire Company would tap in on the register to let the Fire Alarm Office know that they returned to quarters.  We ring 3-3-5 on the Ceremonial Bell to signify that the Firefighter has made his final return home.
